How to Create Your Own One Piece TCG Playmat
If you're looking for a One Piece playmat in Australia, there's a pretty good chance you don't want the same mass-produced mat everyone else has. That's where custom comes in. At Tako Mats, we make custom TCG playmats right here in Australia. You bring the artwork, choose how you want your mat set up, and we'll turn it into a playmat made just for you. And for One Piece Card Game players, we've built dedicated card zone overlays that can be added straight over your design.
Creating your custom One Piece playmat is pretty simple. Start with your artwork, choose between our Slim 2mm and Plush 5mm mats, then decide whether you want One Piece card zones added to your design. If you do want card zones, you can have them with or without headings. So your mat can be as clean or as structured as you want it.
Build Your Mat Around Your Favourite One Piece Character
Sometimes you already know exactly what you want. Maybe you're hunting for the perfect Luffy playmat, something darker for a Zoro playmat, or artwork that matches the Leader you're currently playing. Going custom means you don't have to wait for somebody to make that exact mat.
Luffy Playmats
With Luffy there's a ridiculous amount of artwork to choose from, but Gear 5 Luffy is an obvious place to start if you want something that really fills a playmat. Try looking for terms like Gear 5 Luffy wallpaper, Sun God Nika wallpaper or Monkey D. Luffy 4K wallpaper and you'll generally get much more useful landscape artwork than simply searching “Luffy image”. That gives you a much better starting point for creating your own Luffy playmat, particularly if you want something built around Gear 5 or the Sun God Nika aesthetic.

Zoro Playmats
Zoro also works incredibly well on a darker mat. If a standard Zoro playmat isn't quite what you're imagining, searches around Roronoa Zoro, King of Hell Zoro and landscape or 4K wallpapers can uncover much more interesting artwork. The darker greens, blacks and purple tones that appear in a lot of Zoro artwork can look particularly good once they're spread across the full width of a mat.

Nami, Law, Boa, Ace, Shanks and Beyond
Of course, it doesn't have to be Luffy or Zoro. One Piece gives you a fairly ridiculous number of characters to work with. We've seen One Piece players build mats around characters like Nami, Trafalgar Law, Boa Hancock, Portgas D. Ace, Shanks, Sanji, Nico Robin, Yamato, Doflamingo, Enel, Kaido and plenty of others.
And you don't necessarily have to build around a single character. A Straw Hat Crew playmat, Heart Pirates theme, Marines design or artwork based around another crew or faction can work particularly well because group artwork naturally fills the wide shape of a TCG playmat.
If you're building your mat around the One Piece Card Game rather than just your favourite character, another option is matching the artwork to the Leader or deck you're actually playing. Add our optional One Piece card zones over the top and you end up with something that feels like it was designed specifically for your deck rather than pulled off a shelf.

Don't Have Artwork Yet? Here's Where to Start
One of the questions we get with custom playmats is pretty simple: where do I actually find the artwork? If you know you want a custom One Piece playmat but haven't found the image yet, image search is a good place to start. The trick is knowing what to search for.
Instead of searching for something broad like:
Luffy image
try:
Luffy 4K wallpaper
Gear 5 Luffy wallpaper
Sun God Nika landscape wallpaper
Roronoa Zoro 4K wallpaper
King of Hell Zoro wallpaper
Trafalgar Law desktop wallpaper
Boa Hancock landscape wallpaper
One Piece Straw Hat Crew wallpaper
Adding terms like wallpaper, desktop, landscape, widescreen or 4K can make a massive difference to the results.
Why Wallpapers Work So Well for Playmats
Playmats are wide. Desktop wallpapers are also wide. That sounds obvious, but it makes them a very useful starting point when you're looking for artwork. Portrait artwork can still make an incredible mat, but there's often a lot more work involved in cropping, extending or repositioning the image to fill the available space. A good landscape wallpaper already has a composition designed to fill a wide area. That means characters are less likely to have their heads, swords, hats or other important parts of the artwork chopped off when the image is adapted to the playmat.
Find the Biggest Version You Can
Resolution matters. 1920 x 1080 is good, but 4K is better. An image can look absolutely perfect on your phone and still be tiny when we try to spread it across an entire playmat. If you find something you love through an image search, don't automatically save the little preview that Google shows you. Try to follow it back to the original source and find the largest, highest-resolution version available. Try and not just upload the thumbnail because that doesnt give us much room to clean it up.
Don't Stress if the Image Isn't Perfect
You don't need to be a graphic designer to order a custom mat from us. Our Image Cleanup Promise means we'll check your artwork and, where possible, help prepare and improve it for production.
A picture looking great on your phone doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look great stretched across an entire playmat. That's why we don't just blindly print whatever gets uploaded. If we spot something that's clearly going to cause a problem, we'd much rather deal with it before making your mat than print something we know isn't going to look right.
Slim 2mm or Plush 5mm?
Once you've got your artwork sorted, your first real product choice is how you want your One Piece playmat to feel.
Slim 2mm
Our Slim 2mm gives you the classic lower-profile TCG playmat feel. It's lightweight, easy to roll up and a great option if you prefer a thinner mat on the table.
Plush 5mm
Then there's our Plush 5mm. It's noticeably thicker, softer and more substantial. The extra cushioning gives the mat a more premium feel and also makes cards easier to pick up from the playing surface. The Plush 5mm has been becoming an increasingly popular choice with our customers, and if you're already going to the effort of creating your own custom One Piece mat, the Plush is the more premium option.
Add One Piece Card Zones (Or Don't)
Next comes the fun bit. You can leave your custom playmat completely clean with no card zones at all, allowing the artwork to take over the entire surface, or you can add our One Piece card zone overlay.
The overlay adds the dedicated playing areas for your One Piece Card Game setup while still allowing the artwork underneath to remain a major part of the design. This way you can create a One Piece playmat with zones designed around the artwork you've actually chosen.
One Piece Card Zones With Headings or Without?
If you choose to add card zones, there's one more decision.
Choose card zones with headings if you want the full structured One Piece TCG layout. The different areas are clearly labelled, giving you an immediately recognisable playing surface and making it easy to see where everything belongs.

If you prefer something cleaner, choose card zones without headings. You still get the visual structure and positioning of the zones, but without the additional text competing with your artwork.

There's no right answer here. Some artwork looks fantastic with the full labelled layout. Other designs work better when the overlay is kept as minimal as possible. And if you've found an image you absolutely love and don't want anything covering it? Skip the zones altogether.
One Piece Playmats Made by Our Customers
This is probably our favourite part. We've made a lot of custom One Piece playmats, and seeing what people come up with is half the fun.
Some people go straight for Luffy or Gear 5. Some want a Zoro playmat built around darker King of Hell artwork. Others build around Trafalgar Law, Boa Hancock, Ace, Shanks or whichever character they're currently obsessed with. Then there are people who build the whole design around their deck or Leader rather than choosing their favourite character.
That's really the point of custom. You're not choosing your favourite design from somebody else's catalogue. You're building yours.
Made in Australia
Every Tako Mats custom playmat is made to order right here in Australia. Your custom design isn't sent overseas to be manufactured and then shipped back. Which One Piece Playmat Should You Choose?
It really comes down to three decisions.
Slim 2mm or Plush 5mm?
Choose Slim if you prefer the traditional thinner TCG playmat feel.
Choose Plush if you want something thicker, softer and more substantial.
Card zones or no card zones?
Go without zones if you want the artwork to completely dominate your mat.
Add our One Piece card zones if you prefer a dedicated layout for playing.
Headings or no headings?
Choose headings for the full labelled layout, or remove them for a cleaner, more minimal look.
That's it. The artwork is where you get to make the mat completely your own.
